Hardwood Management
Management of the hardwood resource on nonindustrial private forest land is rare in the south. Information on what to do and how to do it is oftentimes difficult for a landowner to find and, until recently, there was no economic incentive for any formal management. With hardwood types comprising 85 percent of live tree volume in Tennessee, we believe that active management of the hardwood resource is extremely important to meet the ever growing demands on our forests.
Now, with hardwood stumpage and delivered prices equal to or greater than pine prices and with long-term trends being quite positive, our hardwood resource should receive the attention it deserves. Active hardwood forest management can, and does, provide good rates of return to the landowner.
